Dimdim Now Available as VMWare Appliance

dimdim This looks interesting. Dimdim web conferencing is removing usage restrictions from their open source version. I also think it is a smart move on the part of software vendors (open source or commercial) to make VMWare appliances available. I am already downloading the Dimdim appliance and plan on testing it myself.

In the next week we will release a new version of the Dimdim Open Source Community Edition to SourceForge.net.  (UPDATE: our new Open Source release is now available) That version is on par with the features of our hosted offerings, removes the 5 attendee limit, enables multiple simultaneous meetings and even adds a 2-way video chat feature. We have also packaged the Dimdim Servers into a single VMWare Virtual Appliance to ease the installation process.  You'll also notice much improved documentation and a new admin console.

Online collaborating and teaching can work, If you have trust and the right tools. I recently tried http://www.showdocument.com - good app for uploading documents and working on them in real-time. Most file types are supported and it needs no installation. - andy

The VM worked for me

Vipen,

Yes, I was able to run the VM using VMware server running on a spare XP computer (a little old, but 3GB of memory). I didn't spend much time with it and don't recall all the details. But, I recall uploading a Powerpoint presentation and having a small problem with incorrect fonts being used (my guess) and it not formatting correctly. But, the VM ran.

DimDim VMware Appliance

I got the dimdim vmware appliance to run very well, and very quickly, inside my network. The problem is accessing it from outside. My setup is: ADSL connection (with static IP's) Linux box firewall/router running Apache and Shorewall How can I route traffic for the dimdim VM Appliance? If I route it using Apache works from inside LAN, but outside users can't connect as is private IP. If I configure dimdim with an external IP, then doesn't work either? What configuration can I use for Shorewall and Apache to get my dimdim appliance on my LAN to work? Thanx in advance!! Best regards ash

DimDim Virtual Appliance checkout

Some months back I tried to get the VM to work, but with no luck. Tried posting the question in the Forums, no response. I wonder how your DimDIm VM appliance worked? Would be interested in the outcome. Vipen
